Meeting Notes March 24

The following are the highlights of our most recent meeting.

  • Isaac will contact FOR's Nyack, New York office regarding FOR's "Campaign of Consience for the Iraqi People" campaign, sending water filtration systems for the Iraqi People, and will report soon on the work of FOR in getting these water filtration systems to the Iraqi people at this time of need. At the meeting we agreed that if FOR is currently sending water filtration systems, we will hold an emergency meeting to plan for fundraising to send these water filtration systems from our Kootenay FOR chapter.
  • Bobbie and Grant to research Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders, determining which organization is currently "on the ground" doing humanitarian work in Iraq, ... to receive the $500 from the donations received from the Rice for Peace project. Our intent is to have the $500 donated to either Oxfam or Doctors Without Borders or to split the funds between theses two organizations. Bobbie and Grant will come back with a recommendation of where to send the $500, after they research the matter.
  • Scott Kennedy will receive $200 from us to cover his expenses incurred from his presentation last fall. David, Kootenay FOR treasurer will send the funds to Scott Kennedy.
  • FOR get together of members and friends to share analysis of the current war in Iraq, discuss and self-educate each other, at Nelson United Church (Josephine and Silica), April 12 at 4:00pm.
  • Consensus was reached to continue the Rice for Peace project locally for at least the next two weeks. Isaac and Grant will work further towards taking the Rice for Peace project nationally.
  • Trish is writing a letter to the Nelson Daily News thanking them for their coverage and informing the community of the 800 packets that have been sent to Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
  • David, Grant and Avi will attend the Peace Rally this Sat. March 29th and help with FOR's Rice For Peace table and bring the canopies for the FOR table and two canopies for the main stage.

There will be a Kootenay FOR dinner potluck at Isaac’s home Friday, April 4th at 6:30pm. Join us in an evening of sharing good food and peace song folk singing.

Hope to see you there!

Our next Kootenay FOR meeting is scheduled for 7:00 pm Monday, April 7th at Nelson United Church (602 Silica, at Josephine). New members are welcome as we share in warm community and move forward with peace projects on many fronts.
